This article reviews the empirical evidence alleged to demonstrate that innovation has been retarded or blocked by means of corporate strategies for the use of patents. In other words, are there ways in which the exploitation of the exclusive development right of the patent can be shown to retard the process of innovation, other than in the trivial sense of excluding third parties from the right to develop the technology covered by the patent? So in this paper a corporate strategy of technology suppression is understood to be the deliberate hindering or outright blocking of the development of useful technology….
